Why block paving needs more than a wash

Block paving takes a battering on Teesside driveways and patios: rain washes the jointing sand out, moss and weeds seed into the gaps, and years of tyres and foot traffic grind grime into the block faces. A quick hose down never fixes any of that. Restoring block paving properly means dealing with the joints as much as the surface, otherwise weeds are back within a season and the sand keeps disappearing every time it rains.

How we do the job

We start with a thorough jet wash across the whole area, lifting years of built-up dirt, algae and moss out of the block faces without blasting the surface apart. Once it's clean and dry, we brush fresh kiln-dried jointing sand into every gap, compacting it in so the blocks are locked together properly again, this is what stops them rocking and shifting. A sealant goes on last, which protects the colour, makes future spills easier to wipe off, and helps keep the new sand where it should be.

Dealing with weeds properly

Weeds growing through block paving joints are more than an eyesore, their roots widen the gaps and speed up sand loss. We treat weeds at the root as part of the restoration rather than just strimming the tops off, so the joints stay clear for much longer once they're sealed. If your drive or patio has been left to get on with it for a few years, this is usually where we spend the most time.

Signs it's time to restore, not just clean

A quick surface wash is fine for a drive that's just a bit dusty, but there are clear signs a full restoration is due instead: sand missing from between the blocks, blocks starting to rock underfoot, moss or weeds established along the joint lines, or the colour looking patchy and faded compared to when it was laid. Left long enough, missing sand lets blocks move under the weight of a car, which is when a driveway starts needing more than a clean, it needs re-laying. Restoring it properly while it's still just a jointing problem is a lot cheaper than waiting for that.

Looking after it afterwards

Once a drive or patio has been restored and sealed, it's a lot easier to keep on top of. A rinse down every few months keeps grit and organic matter from building up again, and because the joints are sealed, weeds have a much harder time getting a foothold in the first place. Most restored block paving stays looking sharp for several years before it needs the full treatment again, especially compared with block paving that's never been sealed at all.
