No, never. High pressure strips the protective granules off roof tiles and forces water under the laps. We scrape moss off by hand and finish with a low-pressure biocide treatment instead.

How do you reach steep or high roofs?

We use our own cherry picker with MEWP-qualified operators, the same kit we use on commercial high-access jobs across Teesside, so awkward roofs are handled safely without relying on ladders.

Will the moss come back?

The biocide treatment keeps working for months after we've applied it, so regrowth is much slower than scraping alone. Most roofs stay clear for a good while.

Can you fix lead flashing while you're up there?

Yes. If your flashing needs repainting we can often sort it while our cherry picker is already in place, so it's one visit rather than two.

Ray started IGM in Ingleby Barwick back in 2016, and roof cleaning was one of the first jobs on the books. A decade on, it's still one we get called out for most, particularly on the older estates around Stockton and Teesside where north-facing pitches never quite dry out between showers. Moss holds water against the tile, the freeze-thaw cycle over a Teesside winter does the rest, and cracked tile faces follow. Our method hasn't changed because it's the correct one. We scrape the moss off by hand, tile by tile, so nothing is forced under a lap or driven into the roof space. Once that's done, we apply a biocide treatment at low pressure that keeps killing spores at the root for months afterwards, so the roof carries on improving long after we've left. What we won't do is pressure wash a roof.
