Why we invested in our own cherry picker

A lot of exterior work on a house or commercial building is limited by what a ladder or a tower can safely reach. Owning our own cherry picker changed that for us. It means we can get a stable, properly positioned platform right up against a roof, a gutter run or a high wall, and get the job done thoroughly rather than working around what's reachable from the ground. Our operators are MEWP-qualified, so the machine is handled properly on every job, residential or commercial.

What the cherry picker gets used for

On homes, the cherry picker is our go-to for gutter, fascia and soffit cleaning on tall or awkward properties, high-level roof cleaning and moss removal, and solar panel cleaning on roofs a water-fed pole can't manage. It also handles jobs a standard ladder simply won't reach safely, such as high render or cladding, tree-line gutter runs, and upper-storey windows and frames.

Commercial high-access work

We take on commercial access jobs across Teesside for offices, landlords, property managers and other trades that need a reliable platform at height. One example is our work on the 1689 building on Finkle Street, Stockton, where we provided cherry picker access for Hartburn Roofing to carry out roof work on a historic town-centre building, the kind of job that needs a machine and an operator who can be trusted around a listed structure and a busy street.

As well as our own cleaning and maintenance work, we hire the cherry picker out with a MEWP-qualified operator for other trades who need high access, roofers, builders, signwriters, tree surgeons and similar. You get the machine and someone who knows how to position and operate it safely, without having to source your own MEWP ticket or arrange separate equipment hire.

Why own the machine rather than hire it in

Plenty of firms borrow access equipment job by job, which means booking around whatever's available and paying hire costs on every visit. Owning the cherry picker outright means we can respond quickly, keep the same operators using the same machine every time, and take on regular commercial arrangements where a customer needs reliable access on an ongoing basis rather than a one-off booking. It's a big investment for a family firm, but it's paid off in the range of work we can now take on, from a single house gutter clean to a multi-day commercial job.

High-access work carries obvious risks if it's not done properly, which is exactly why our operators hold MEWP qualifications rather than just knowing how to drive the machine. That covers safe positioning on different ground conditions, working near roads and pedestrians on commercial sites like Finkle Street, and handling the platform correctly around roofs, gutters and cladding without causing damage. It's the difference between a cherry picker being a shortcut and it being done properly.
