Cherry picker vs scaffolding for high-access work

For most one-off high-access jobs, cleaning, painting, inspections, a cherry picker with a MEWP-qualified operator is quicker to set up, quicker to move, and doesn't need a pavement closed off for days. Scaffolding still has its place for longer, multi-day building work where people need to stand and work at height for extended periods.

Two different ways to reach height

Scaffolding and a cherry picker (a MEWP, or mobile elevating work platform) both get someone safely up to a wall, roof or window that's too high to reach from a ladder. Beyond that, they work very differently, and which one makes sense depends on the job.

Speed and set-up

A cherry picker can typically arrive, get positioned, and be in use within an hour. Scaffolding has to be erected piece by piece, and depending on the size of the job that can take the best part of a day or more before any actual work starts, and then it has to come down again afterwards, doubling the time spent on access rather than the job itself. For a clean, a paint job, or an inspection that takes a few hours, that setup and take-down time on scaffolding can end up being longer than the job.

Access and footprint

Scaffolding needs a footprint on the ground for its full height, and often needs to stay up for the duration of the job, which can mean a pavement, driveway or car park space is out of action for days. A cherry picker only occupies the ground space it's parked on at any one time, and it can reposition around a building as the work moves, useful for commercial buildings in tight town centre locations, like period buildings on narrow streets, where there's simply no room to erect a full scaffold.

The operator matters as much as the machine

A cherry picker is only as safe as the person operating it. Our operators are MEWP-qualified, which means they've been trained specifically to operate the platform safely around buildings, overhead obstructions and the public. That matters just as much on a residential job as it does on a commercial building in a busy town centre.

Which is right for your job?

For most of the high-access work we're asked to do, roof and gutter work, render and window cleaning, painting fascias and lead flashing, a cherry picker is the quicker, more practical choice, and it's why we run our own rather than relying on scaffolders for every job. If you've got a building that needs work at height, get in touch and we'll talk through the best way to access it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cherry picker cheaper than scaffolding?

It depends on the job, but because it sets up and comes down far faster, a cherry picker is often the more cost-effective option for shorter jobs like cleaning or painting, where scaffolding's setup time would otherwise dominate the cost.

Can a cherry picker reach every part of a building?

In most cases yes, and it can reposition to reach different elevations, but ground conditions, overhead cables and very tight spaces can occasionally limit access, we'll assess this on site before quoting.

Do you need scaffolding for a roof clean?

No, roof cleaning is scraped and treated from appropriate access, which is very often a cherry picker rather than scaffolding, especially for a job measured in hours rather than days.

Why do you use a cherry picker rather than hiring scaffolding for every job?

Because most of our high-access work is short, cleaning, painting or inspection rather than extended building work, and a cherry picker with a MEWP-qualified operator gets that done faster with far less disruption to the property or the street.
